How to Turn Off the Trailer Brake System on a Chevy Silverado

2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 on construction site

Trailer brakes help you control your trailer more quickly and effectively on Camp Lejeune drives and beyond. When you own a Chevy Silverado, your trailer brake system is relatively easy to use and can be calibrated with just a few button touches.

However, there may be instances where you don’t want to use the integrated trailer brake system on your Chevy Silverado, such as when you’re on private property. Read our guide on how to turn off the trailer brake system on a Chevy Silverado for more details.

How to Turn Off the Trailer Brake System on a Chevy Silverado the Easy Way

The easiest way to turn off the trailer brake system on a Chevy Silverado is to put the gain as low as possible simply.

  1. Turn on the integrated brake system on your Chevy Silverado driver information screen.
  2. Push the minus button all the way down until the brake gain is set to 0.5.
  3. Use the trailer brakes manually if you need to by squeezing the two slider buttons together.

The other way to do this is by simply not using the electrical system on the trailer, which we do not recommend unless you’re just trailering on private property. When driving on public roads around Richlands, you must have the trailer connected to your Chevy correctly and the trailer brakes working if the load is 2,000 pounds or more.

Chevy Truck Trailer Wiring Color Code

Always check your owner’s manual before learning how to turn off your trailer brake system on a Chevy Silverado. For the Chevy truck trailer wiring color code, you’ll see at least seven wires in the plug going from the trailer to the truck. The one for the trailer brakes is likely a thick dark blue wire, which is for the auxiliary functions of the trailer. If you have electrical experience, you can disable this wire. However, we strongly recommend leaving the Chevy truck trailer wiring color code up to the expert service technicians at Marine Chevrolet near Sneads Ferry.

But if you do decide to disable the integrated brake system by yourself, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  1. Remove the Chevy trailer hitch cover
  2. Access the electrical wires
  3. Find the correct wire
  4. Disable the wire
  5. Add the Chevy trailer hitch cover back onto the ball.
